Man with Horrific Childhood Become "Doctor Sleep"

Did you know, Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining? In this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

Review:
This novel is written by Steve King who wrote a book about a man who saved his son, even when he couldn't save himself; this is written by an author who has dried out and settled down, who has stared death in the face, and lived to hold his grandkids.

That being Doctor Sleep, the long awaited, much anticipated sequel to "The Shining" and a continuation of the story of Danny Torrance, 5 years old when we met him last, survivor of The Overlook Hotel.

Dan is a young adult still battling his demons, real and figuratively. He drinks to help block out the chilling memories of the Overlook Hotel and to dull his senses to the new and macabre visions that haunt him daily. When he tires of drifting around he decides to settle in a small town in New Hampshire that he feels drawn to. Shortly after arriving Dan hits his mental and physical breaking point, and finally seeks some much needed help. Through time and support he starts to realize that his abilities can be useful and are appreciated more than he could have ever imagined. He takes a job at a hospice and helps the dying during their last moments to slip off without fear, hence the title, "Doctor sleep". During his health recovery he becomes attached to a group of locals who become his friends and mentors. When they are asked to take a terrifying leap of faith into Dan's unbelievable and inconceivable world, they are all put to the mortal test. For years he has felt a connection to another that Shines on his level and has his abilities. Since he has been in New Hampshire it is evident that he is there for a reason,...This powerful force now desperately needs his help.

Abra is a young girl who has had an incredibly bright Shine since birth. Horrible events and their strong telepathic powers bring Dan and Ambra together. They understand that it will take both of them to stop a hideous group of Shining undead who gruesomely feed on children that have the Shine. They must push their abilities to the limit in a mind endeavor that they may not make it back from. They tap the much needed help of friends, family and even some unexpected appearances from some old acquaintances of Danny's. Important past hidden events and some long kept secrets are uncovered that may just help to save their lives.

When you download or buy Doctor Sleep a Novel kindle ebook by Steve King, a deeply involving battle between good and evil, this will grab you by the throat and drag you down into those places where nothing and yet everything could be real.

"Doctor sleep", almost like "The Shining" , really is about inner demons. Some of them are of the paranormal kind (Dan works hard to shut away the ghosts from the Overlook and it isn't easy), but some are a part of us, our own weaknesses and failings that get in the way of our best selves. Those, Dan discovers, are much harder to defeat and take much greater courage. The ebook is also about finding your true place in the world (or purpose, perhaps) and about repaying debts. Hallorann helped Dan when he was a child; now Dan will help Abra. As King describes it, "Life is a wheel, and it always comes back around."
